CLAN OF XYMOX

Tomorrow evening I'll be warming up for the Detachments live show at The Big Chill House with a bunch of post punk and minimal wave records. I packed this track last night when I was sorting through some records. I've been loving it all week after rediscovering it on the Creatures Of The Night Optimo podcast. Optimo have basically taken a scalpel to the A Day Remix - taken out the gothic overtones - and ramped up the screeching best bit. An example of what re-editing can achieve! This is most certainly in the bag for tomorrow night for when the dancefloor gets going.

You can get it on this LP as you shouldn't DJ out with 160kps MP3's.

Bitchy Waiter + Marcia Brady = LOVE

Today is August 5 and a day that we should all brush our hair a hundred strokes before bedtime, practice our cheer leading skills and guard our noses from flying footballs because today is the birthday of Marcia Brady herself, Maureen McCormick. In honor of this special day I want to imagine what it would have been like for Marcia and The Bitchy Waiter to work together at Mr. Haskell's ice cream hut. We know that she worked there very briefly until that bitch Jan came in and stole her job away from her, but what if... Behold, a page from Marcia's diary:

Dear Diary,
Today at work was totally groovy. I absolutely love working for Mr. Haskell at the ice cream hut. I'm not supposed to eat any ice cream without paying for it but sometimes I can't resist a tiny taste of the Rocky Road! I'd better watch how much I eat though because I don't want to get fat like that cow of a sister of mine, Jan. She's so jealous of me. Anyway, today was much better than yesterday when my old boyfriend Doug came in and I poured a hot fudge sundae on his head. I don't care about Doug anymore. Today a new boy started working with me and he is totally dreamy. He has the cutest dimples and the curliest hair in the whole wide world. When I see him, I feel like I'm dancing on a rainbow and The Monkeees are playing "Daydream Believer" in my heart. When he first showed up for work, the first thing I did was run to the bathroom to apply a new coat of Precious Pouty Pink lip gloss and then I practiced my smile in the mirror. Too bad I was wearing my uniform of ugly blue pants today! Why couldn't he first see me in my terrific plaid mini skirt with my favorite ruffle shirt? Oh well. I went out and introduced myself to him. He said "hey" and I practically melted faster than the ice cream does when Mr. Haskell won't turn on the air conditioning. He seems like a great worker but I did notice that every time Mr. Haskell went to his office the first thing he did was eat a scoop of ice cream and make a call on the pay phone. He wouldn't tell me his name either, but I think it just adds to his mysteriousness. He told me to call him Bitchy Waiter. Sigh. Mrs. Marcia Bitchy Waiter. Mrs. Marcia Bitchy Waiter! I think I love him! He must be really shy because he never responded to any of my best moves. I tossed my hair, I giggled, I asked for help carrying a heavy box and I even asked him if he would walk me home from school one day but nothing seems to be working. At least I know he doesn't like Jan either because she came into to look at the schedule and all he did when he saw her was compliment her shoes. (Which used to be mine because Jan is the middle child and all she gets are hand me downs. Oh Jan. Poor Jan.) Towards the end of the shift, Greg came in to buy some ice cream for Alice to serve as dessert. At first, I thought Bitchy Waiter must know Greg because as soon as he came in, he went right up to him and told him hello. Bitchy Waiter couldn't stop staring at Greg the whole time he was there. He must have been admiring Greg's letter jacket or something. After Greg left Bitchy Waiter asked me all these questions about him and wanted to know if he had a girlfriend and what his hobbies were and what size shoe he wore. Finally, he was talking to me!! He does like me! I invited him over for dinner tonight since Alice was making her world famous meatloaf. At first he said he couldn't make it but then he asked if Greg would be there. Once I told him I was sure he would be, he decided to come! He asked me to call him if I find out that Greg won't be there though. Oh, Dear Diary, I think I am in love. He should be here for dinner any minute. I will keep you posted. (And Cindy, if you are reading this, stop it!)

Love,
Marcia

Bitter, Party of One? Your Table is Ready

Within a few short days, I will be back to waiting tables. As I typed that just now, a tear fell onto my keyboard and I heard a one-eyed waitress laughing at me from far far away. For the past few weeks I have been okay with feeling like and actor and then being on vacation and not having any waiter nightmare sweats. But by this time next week, I will be ironing my uniform and practicing my fake smile. I need to sprinkle some Pristiq on my Cheerios and take an extra heaping helping dose of Paxil in order to fight a severe case of the sads... Here are a few things I am not looking forward to:

  • carrying ice that is not part of my cocktail

  • eating hummus while squatting behind the bar so no one see me

  • having to ask if Pepsi is alright when someone orders a Coke

  • scraping wax from a table because a lady thought her ass was small enough to squeeze into a booth but it wasn't and she knocked over a candle

  • trying to remember what a regular orders because I don't even recall that shit when I don't have 9 weeks off

  • trying to remember what my number is to log into the computer. (seriously, Tom...what is it?)

  • standing in front of a computer that has no internet access or porn because it is only good for placing drink orders

  • serving cocktails while other people are performing and trying to remember that the applause is not for me

  • saying I am a waiter

  • explaining where I have been over and over again to people who don't really care, they just want their fucking drink

  • wearing long sleeved shirts

  • wearing long pants

  • wearing socks

There are a few things I am looking forward to:

  • my after shift cocktail

  • seeing my co-workers

  • my after shift cocktail

  • tips and cash in my pocket

  • my after shift cocktail

  • being home again

  • my after shift cocktail

  • having new stories to bitch about on this fucking blog

  • my after shift cocktail

Can you think of anything else that will make me feel better about slapping the apron back on? Please help me. I am trying really hard to not be all dpressed and shit.

Frazzled But Happy Stay-at-Home Mom

Several weeks ago on a post about comments someone suggested that I "grow up, have a family and write about something that matters." I wrote about The Frazzled But Happy Stay-at-Home Mom and I got a real kick out of it. Since I am not waiting tables right now (full time actor, you know...) I thought it would be a good time to have entry #2 from that adorable housewife.

Heavens to Betsy, dear readers! This day has been full of surprises and I am so behind on my housework that I shouldn't be writing at all today, but I couldn't resist so here I am. LOL. I awoke this morning at 4:52 (a whole eight minutes before my alarm was set to go off!) to Suzy Lou climbing into bed with me because she had a bad dream. Or as she says it, "bad dweam" which sounds so cute that it brings tears to my eyes. Thank goodness last night was not a night that Hubby shares a bed with me or he would have been so cross if he would have woken up three hours before he needed to. He was in his bedroom/office/study/man cave and sound asleep. (Note to self: I must remind him to give me a key to that door today because I have not dusted in there for days and days and he probably has clothes all over the place that need washing.) I asked Suzy Lou what her "dweam" (LOL) was about and she said she only remembered that it was about her being in ballet class without her tutu and all the other little girls were making fun of her. How horrible for her, poor dear. I dreamed once that I was at the grocery store looking through my coupon wallet when I realized that I was in nothing but my slip and pantyhose and my hair was in curlers! It was awful and I woke up embarrassed. I tucked Suzy Lou into bed with me and the little angel was asleep within two minutes. I got up at 5:00, grabbed my list of chores and got to work. After ironing Hubby's clothes (I love you, Sweetie if ur reading this, LOL), making his lunch, baking bread for his breakfast toast, and picking blueberries for his oatmeal, it was time to take a bath, set my hair and do my make up so that by the time he woke up at 8:00 I looked like how he likes to see me: fresh and clean and as pretty as the day we met. (By the way, have I told you that story before?? He saw me in a beauty contest he was judging for and asked me on a date the day after I got second place. The girl who won first was named Veronica. She went out on one date with Hubby the night before the beauty contest. She was very popular. She went out on one date with each of the three judges but I guess things didn't work out for her, because one date was all she ever got with each of them. And they all took her to a drive-in movie to see the same movie three nights in a row! Hubby still sees her once a week because she has had a hard life and he feels like he can give her good advice. Isn't he the bestest?? So sweet and giving. I wuv you! She may have won the beauty contest but I won my Husband! LOL.)

Oh dear, look how much time I spent writing about Hubby when I meant to be telling you all about how my washer broke down today and I had to wash everything by hand in the sink. My poor hands, LOL!! Never fear though. I will make sure I put Vaseline on them tonight and sleep with gloves on so that by tomorrow when it's time to give Hubby his weekly massage, my hands will be just as soft as a baby's bottom. The last time that my hands were too rough he took away half my allowance. I didn't know how I was going to pay for groceries that week but I dipped into my secret stash of dollars that I keep in the cookie jar on top of the refrigerator. (Don't read that, Hubby, okay? LOL. I wuv you so so much. And if you are reading this please tell Veronica that I said hello when you see her tonight and I hope things pick up for her, the poor thing. And I won't wait up.)

Slutty Fringe and World Unknown

We'll start this off with saying sorry about Friday night and The Drop being closed down by the council a few hours before the THISISNOTANEXIT party. A total nightmare. Still, we'll have Night Plane back over soon for a live show and keep you abreast of Thisisnotanexit events.

Oooohhhhhhhhh here we go.

For those who needs their THISISNOTANEXIT live fix then there are two London based events over the next couple of weeks which are of note.

First up is the Slutty Fringe 4th Birthday Party at The Big Chill House on Saturday 7th August. It's almost a Thisisnotanexit party as Detachments will be playing live and myself and Matt Waites (aka Moscow) will be DJing alongside the Slutty Fringe people. Moscow remixed Detachments Fear No Fear and has been a friend of Thisisnotanexit from the start so should be a blast.

I'll be doing the early shift from 8.30pm spinning weird synth records, post punk and minimal wave. Proper DJs and proper beatmatching later on after Detachments.

Facebook event page:

Then on Friday 13th August Detachments head South to play at the quite awesome World Unknown party in Brixton. Hosted by Andy Blake and Joe Hart and playing the sort of music Thisisnotanexit wholeheartedly approves of. I'll let them tell you what the score is.

World Unknown is a monthly session with a soundtrack that takes in elements of Belgian new beat, EBM, electro, acid house, synth wave, techno and dark balearic, and hangs out somewhere in the territory inhabited by Ron Hardy's wild, kinetic take on house in its prototype form at Chicago's legendary Muzic Box circa '83-'86, alternative dance mecca Medusa's in Chicago during roughly the same period and later and the sound of Belgian clubs Boccaccio, Carrere and Ancienne Belgique in the mid to late 80s. Naturally Andy and Joe bring things bang up to date with their own unique take on things, digging deep into their expansive, labour-of-love record collections for those gems that nobody else is playing...yet.

Andy Blake has remixed Detachments new single Holiday Romance into an 18 minute 1 take acid house groove that was exclaimed by the Slutty Fringe guys to be the remix of the year. So watch out for that out soon. Somehow everything on this post links all together. Beautiful.

Concord the Grape

A few weeks ago, I promised that the 2400th fan would get a blog post written about them. That fan was Grape Winebar and as promised, here it is. How the hell I am going to write a story about a freakin' winebar, I dunno...

Concord Grape was born on a cold September morning in Jacksonville, Florida. His vine was next to a pond that had a never ending stream of murky water being pumped into it from a big drainage pipe. From day one, his life was not easy. Most of his brothers and sisters on the vine didn't survive the uncommonly cold weather that fall and those who did simply became breakfast for a few squirrels, some birds and a one-eyed waitress named Sally who lived under a bridge with her husband The Troll. As Concord grew older, he could see that his future was not bright and he longed for adventure. He looked at the road and wondered what was just beyond the bend. Desperate to move on and avoid his almost assured life of a raisinhood he hatched a plan to escape this dreadful vine that was holding him back from a lifetime of excitement.

One day, as Sally was foraging for her dinner alongside her cat Maisy (who was named after a character in the musical The Boyfriend), Concord realized they could be his escape vehicles. If he could just loosen himself from his vine at the right moment, he could fall onto the fat back of Maisy and balance himself there as they left the field and he could say goodbye to the patch of boredom he had called home for so many days. (The lifespan of a grape is very short.) As Maisy moseyed underneath him, Concord used every drop of grape juice within him to release himself from the vine. At the precise moment, he felt his stem release its grip and he began to fall towards the fat cat. However, Maisy saw a mouse at the exact same time and darted away, but as luck would have it a strong gust of wind blew Concord right into the hem of Sally's dress where he settled in for the ride of his life.

Sally finished her foraging and then squatted down to relieve herself before heading onto her next chore for the day. She made her way to town where she needed to buy some cheese and bread and also refill her prescription for antibiotics to solve a nasty urinary tract infection that she couldn't shake. At the local Bread and Cheese R Us, Concord saw a world he had never seen before. The store was filled with the aroma of day old bread and half eaten wheels of cheese. On a shelf he also spied a huge bowl of grapes that he had never seen before. He knew this is where he was supposed to be. He was no longer a country grape living on a vine. He was now a city grape a whole 100 yards from where he grew up. He was home! As Sally reached up to find a loaf of bread that had the least amount of mold on it, Concord rolled out of the hem and onto the floor. He rolled himself under the table and stayed there until Sally paid for her groceries and left. Little did Concord know, his adventure was just beginning.

Moments later a very old man came into the store to buy his supply of grapes to make his own wine for his family run wine bar. The owner of Bread and Cheese R Us saw the man coming and reached up to the shelf to hand him the grapes that had been set aside for him. Seeing Concord on the floor, he brushed him up with his hand and tossed him into the bowl with the other grapes. Concord was now on his way to his next adventure!

The old man was named Mr. Applehead and he owned a wine bar that was very popular in Jacksonville. People from all over the land would go there just to sample the fine wine that Mr. Applehead could make. Concord soon found himself in a huge vat with thousands of other grapes. He began to make introductions to as many as he could when all of a sudden he he heard screaming from the other side of the vat. Someone was stomping on all of his new found friends and murdering them one by one. What was this horrible place he had found himself in? Why oh why was someone squishing his new friends? Had he really traveled all this way only to meet a horrible death of squishing by bare feet? Yes, he had.

Concord's last thought was how he missed his vine in the country and how simple his life had been in the good ol' days of that morning. As he watched a giant foot come towards him, he flashed back to fond memories with Sally and Maisy and how much fun it had been to watch his brothers and sister turn into raisins. As his insides came gushing out, he realized that he had been a fool to want more than he had on his simple vine. He had longed for adventure and instead ended up as a pile of mushy grape alongside thousands of other grapes he didn't even know. As he began to ferment, he cried.

Months later, Concord was in a bottle of wine. There wasn't much left of Concord as we knew him. He was no longer the round juicy grape that we knew and loved. He was now liquid amongst hundreds if not thousands of other grapes. He was also 12% alcohol and had a fruity yet earthy aftertaste. He was served to a very old lady at Mr. Applehead's wine bar who drank him with a plate of cheese and a cracker. She only left a ten percent tip and the waiter was very unhappy but said nothing because it would have been unprofessional and he expected it anyway since she was so old. The old lady left the wine bar with Concord in her stomach. His next adventure involved a digestive tract ending with an up close and personal look at a toilet and sewer system that would eventually send him back to the very pond he had grown up near. His adventure was finally complete.

Can You Hear Me Now?

I read somewhere that we lucky New Yorkers will soon have the ability to have cell phone service on the subway even when we are underground. Oh, God, no. I live off of the 7 train which is above ground and already have to listen to people yapping about what they ate for dinner and how many times their dog took a dump. I always count the seconds until we go underground and they are all forced to say good bye. People can't go for ten fucking minutes without talking on the phone? Maybe we just skip ahead already to the future (three months from now) when our cell phones will be directly implanted into our heads? There is a time and place to talk on a cell phone. One of those is not in my station. Nothing irritates me as much as someone sitting at my table while talking on the phone but they call me over anyway to try to get me to take their order. They will keep blabbing with the phone cocked under their ear and they hold one finger up at me as if to say "I'm almost done, hold on a sec." Nope. I walk away. I don't need to hear how Johnny broke up with you out of the blue but he's gonna feel really shitty about it because you are not gonna give him back the earrings he gave you for Christmas and you don't care that they were his Grandma's earrings, Johnny needs to learn some respect. One time a lady was sat as she was on the phone so I ignored her until she was done with the call. Maybe about ten minutes at the most. When she hung up, she looked all pissed off and called me over. "Uh, excuse me, but I have been here for twenty minutes (dumb ass customers have no concept of time) and no one has even acknowledged me." In my most sincere voice, I replied, "I am your server and you seemed to be having a business call and I hated to disturb you." Then she had to shut the hell up because she thought I was being nice when really I was just eating my lunch. Dumb bitch. Another time at The Marriott this woman would come in, put her phone on speaker mode and lay it on the table while she ate lunch. At The Marriott we were only allowed to say "It's my pleasure" so I couldn't say anything but I was surprised no one else ever did. She did it all the time. I suppose I could have told her, "Ma'am, it would be my pleasure to ram that phone up your ass for you."

But back to the cell phones on the subway. One time this woman was having a huge argument with her boyfriend as we were headed towards the tunnel. I was trying to figure out how she was gonna wrap it all up before she lost her signal but I guess she didn't care. After we went underground, she just kept yelling for about 90 seconds even though everyone on the train was looking at her and knowing there was nobody on the other end of the line. But my favorite cell phone on the subway story is this one:

GIRL: (on cell phone, loudly) And gurl I was all lookin' good and he was all lookin' at me like he wanted a piece and I was all I don't think so. You done had your chance and you missed it so nows all youse can do is wish you had me, Uh huh. Uh huh. (loud long laugh) I know, right? Well, whatver, I still might hook up with his ass cuz he fine. I know. GURL, I KNOW! I would love to gets my hands on that dick a his again just to show him what he be missin' out on. Uh huh. Uh huh.

MAN: Excuse me, young lady. You are not in your living room.

the girl pulled the phone away from her ear, cocked her head, snarled her lip and said

GIRL: Neither are you. (back into phone) Some asshole tryin' to tell me to get of the phone.
